Now the smoke from a dozen raging fires in Northern California is making its way south, creating potentially hazardous air quality for the Los Angeles area - hundreds of miles south of the Caldor blaze. Air quality around South Lake Tahoe has plummeted in recent days, and areas near Reno reported record-breaking levels of hazardous air. Several large wildfires this year have charred more than 1.6 million acres across the state and sent toxic smoke as far as the East Coast.
